Alongside paramedics, doctors and other health care professionals the unit was supported by volunteer Community First Responders (CFRs) Debbie Towers (Birmingham South Co-ordinator) and Julian Hunter (Birmingham South CFR who gave up their time for free to provide additional resource for Birmingham revellers.

Debbie Towers explained “last night Fastaid CFR responders were supporting the WMAS rapid response vehicles working on Broad Street and later on we worked in the minor injury unit in a very busy few hours” The unit eventually saw 48 casualties treated that otherwise would have been sent to busy A&E units around the city, using already stretched ambulance and A&E resources.

Julian Hunter noted that “These events provide valuable experience for CFR volunteers and we are grateful for all the support we received from full-time WMAS staff and members of the public who were amazed that we gave up our new year’s eve to volunteer to provide support”.

Fastaid Chairman, Tim Atherton, said: “We are very grateful to the council for this donation. It is the result of lots of hard work by our team in South Birmingham, led by Marc Waters. We hope to train another 50 CFRs in the first half of 2010 so this money will be an essential springboard to being
able to do this”

Members of the local FastAid CFR’s group had a photo shoot with Paramedics from the WMAS to stage pictures for the new regional recruitment leaflet soon to be produced from the Community response department.

They were wearing the latest uniform design, that can now be seen worn on CFR’s from all over the region, helping members of the public recognise this growing force of community volunteer staff helping the WMAS save even more lives.

These pictures will be added to a new libary of photo’s for future recruitment leaflets and posters, to encourage members of the local community to learn how they can volunteer their time and be trained by the WMAS to a First Person on Scene qualification and respond to 999 calls and thereby put something back into the local community in which they live

The Chief executive, Antony Marsh, of West Midlands Ambulance Service popped into the monthly meeting of FastAid to present Linda Atherton with the Chief Officer’s Commendation, in recognition of her fast thinking actions only days after attending the Hearstart course.

Whilst on a day trip with her grandson, he had placed a bottle top into his mouth, and unfortunately began to choke when it became lodged into the back of his throat. Linda immediately sprang into action to clear the object from his throat by slapping her hand on his back.

Afterwards Linda said she was amazed how everyone around her just stopped and stared, no one offered to help, nor knew what to do, but she instinctively took the life saving action without thinking, preventing her grandson from a potentially life threatening condition.

The man, who was 45 and from Alvechurch, was cleaning the first floor windows at a house in Slater Road when the incident unfolded at around 6.30pm.
Emergency crews and two Community First Responders were quickly on the scene and called for the help of the Midlands Air Ambulance when it became clear he had suffered ‘potentially serious’ chest, back and neck injuries.
In a stroke of luck for the injured man the air ambulance was able to land in nearby Bentley Heath Park.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The man was cleaning first floor windows when it appears he fell approximately 20 feet onto concrete.
“The man, who was 45 and from Alvechurch, was initially unconscious but gradually came round as he was treated by ambulance staff.
“He had suffered potentially serious chest, back and head injuries and was immobilised before being airlifted to the Regional Trauma Centre at Selly Oak Hospital where medics were on standby for his arrival.
“The paramedic on the rapid response vehicle said that the incident had gone extremely well and the assistance he had from the Community First Responders was first rate.”
